Jamaica, Batty Business, and Walaa wal Baraa

Salam aleikum, Muslims. I would like for you to view these four short videos before reading further.

Now, what do we see here as a pattern? Simply put, you see a largely heritage-based, nationalistic resistance against an evil that is being imported and forced into a disadvantaged society from abroad. This evil is homosexuality. ‘Batty business’ as they call it in their English. So, allow me to address this pattern and what it means to Muslimsin the order I have listed the issues in this title. Jamaica, batty business (homosexuality), and walaa wal baraa.

JAMAICA:

Jamaica’s history began when the first people settled on it, the Arawaks. But its written history began when the Spaniards landed on it and began the genocide on the Arawak, not one of whom remains today without mixture. They and the English imported slaves from Africa there to replace the Arawaks they could no longer enslave. Importing more and more Africans, they eventually turned the island into another African country, miles and miles off shore from the West African coast. The Africans there mingled their languages with English to come up with their distinct patois spoken today in non-formal situations. They held on to many African customs and ways, good and bad, and they were among the foremost resistors to slavery in the Americas, along with the Haitians nearby. They fought oppression, and were at times inspired by Muslims among them. Their maroons, named after the Muslim tribe called Maruns, fought against the Spaniards and the British from their bases in the Blue Mountains. When slavery was abolished, the masses were still poor, and now they are still poor. When independence came, the loans Jamaica took out from the developed world were designed to imprison her in debt, in which its economy is still trapped today. And now, because the nation is dependent on tourist dollars, they generally will cater to tourists and try to show them a good time in their tropical land.

BATTY BUSINESS:

But Jamaica is an African country, far away from the African coast line. And homosexuality is an anathema to African customs, despite the tribal diversity of the continent. Recently, probably as of the 80s, definitely the 90s, the presence and idea of homosexuality has shocked the people there. Despite the possible existence of bent gender roles in some African societies before European contact, and I say possible to be fair to those who claim to have studied this, the fact is that many in Africa and Jamaica have not heard about such before European contact. If it existed, then the fact is that the larger population was unaware of it.So, when it came to the public view of Jamaicans, probably in the 80s, people were horrified and shocked.

As a nation of Bible-believers, who are not always ’sanctified’ and ’saved’ as Christians, they are still a nation of people who base their notions of right and wrong on the Bible and its commandments. The Rastafarians actually have a good concept of walaa wal baraa, despite their lack of Islam. They differentiate between moral people on one side and backbiters, informers, traitiors, murderers, and worst of all, homosexuals on the other. They see homos as sodomites, and homosexuality as something that is naturally wrong to everyone, universally disgusting to all peoples instinctively, and therefore unacceptable as a practice that threatens to tear up the fabric of societies and families. Therefore, homosexuals being nice to them and being polite will not make them feel they have to accept this sort of behavior. It is like someone smiling at you while kicking a bucket of poison over into your water supply. Between the serious Christianity of the masses and the Rastafarianism of the few, homosexuality has fortunately been met with baraa by the disbelieving Jamaicans while the Muslims in Muslim lands are being more tolerant of it and saying nothing when men belly-dance on TV or go to Bahrain for weekends with lady-boys, or even when bedouins in Kuwait go into towns and the sick among them hope to catch a little boy unawares.

WALAA WAL BARAA:

Simply put, I as a Muslim, am dead-set against homosexuality or even men having feminine mannerisms like some do even when they don’t desire other men. I am a homphobe because I am supposed to be, and I refuse to suffer any repercussions because of it. So while I intend to present the facts without bias, I wish to admit to the reader that I am more than just a homophobe, I am a Muslim who is serious and does not give ground to homosexuality. A teenage boy can flutter around and talk more effeminately than a woman, and his parents may feel they have to accept this, but don’t let him tell his parents he wants to get married. So in this matter, I stand with Jamaicans, and with other Africans who oppose this as a nasty evil in a category by itself. I give praise to Jamaica and Jamaicans for their stance against this evil, despite the monied gay interests from abroad that want to impose this evil on them. They have surpassed Muslims in their baraa, and for this I pray that Allah grow the Muslim communities there from their population. But therein lies the issue.

See, as much as they are against it bravely, even in the face of threats of boycotting of them as a tourist destination, they are resisting from a standpoint of Christianity, Rastafarianism, and a sense of their very African national identity. They are morally outraged against this wickedness, but what is missing is a full understanding of why all of us as human beings are even wired to hate such in the first place. Who wired us this way? Why? What reason are we created this way? Is hatred of homosexuality alone a guarantee of salvation? If not, why? What does it mean and what does it not mean? What mindset will make the entire island able to withstand the financial backlash against it for its homophobia? Why has God Almighty not rescued the place from its predicament if it’s so righteously outraged by what God is angry at?

To Jamaica, let me say this; you don’t have to accept some outside or inside agents imposing this evil value on you. Even if someone could come and prove that some African tribe had this practice among its people before anyone of them ever saw a non-African, you wouldn’t have to accept it. Matter of fact, you do have to reject it as you are doing. Our texts agree that societies are destroyed when they accept this. You are an island of brave people who do not bend easily, and of all things to impose in your domain, any idiot should have known that the abomination of abominations would not go over easily amongst you. But by the same token, man cannot live by bread alone, as many of you would say. Likewise, humanity cannot be redeemed by homophobia alone. Salvation requires more than that. For this reason, I invite you to accept Islam, as you are already poised to surpass other Muslims around the world with your proper loyalty to righteousness and your praiseworthy disavowal of wickedness, what we call walaa wal baraa, solidarity and opposition. Many of you may say, “If we do that, then America, Canada, and the UK will come down on us!” I say to you they have already tried this and it didn’t work, did it? You have salvation to gain and nothing to lose.

To the rest of the world, I say that I openly appreciate their resistance to homosexuality and their refusal to accept it as a society. That is not something that needs to be done away with. If anything, it is something that needs to be upped legally until the law will send them to their deaths for this type of behavior if they’re caught. I side with them on this issue. And to top it off, their vigilante justice against homos is dangerous because a straight person could be killed as a gay by a careless accuser or an angry crowd, and yet I find that better than a situation in which someone can say openly that they get busy with others of their own gender and get away with it. The fact that people in Jamaica have babies outside of wedlock routinely is not missed by me as a Muslim, but the fact is it is better than a place where people can forsake the opposite gender and then adopt children because they can’t conceive between themselves. The fact that Jamaica has a problem with corruption is an issue, but its government with its kufr and corruption is superior to America’s with its kufr, corruption, and open legal acceptance of homo business. My only regret is that other Muslims aren’t strong enough or don’t know enough to surpass li’l old me in their baraa against this disgusting lifestyle.

May Allah guide the homophobes to Islam and embarrass the wuslims with them. May Allah guide them to love Him and then love them in return, and make them merciful with the believers while harsh with the disbelievers.
